Creating Chevron's HRMS: an EPIC tale

Article Abstract:

Chevron Corp and Gulf Oil Corp used their 1984 consolidation as an opportunity to rebuild their human resources management systems (HRMS). The firms' HRMS rebuilding process involved two parts: planning the system's design and then its implementation. The levels of the planning infrastructure included a top level advisory committee; a middle level, composed of a human resources review committee and a management team; and a third level project team. The phases the general strategy process of the planning part went through included a strategic overview; system requirements definition; and system design alternatives. The phases of the implementation part of the rebuilding process included business development; purchasing and adapting software; and introduction.

Balancing employee advocacy and the strategic needs of businesses can help human resources professionals focus on their missions, roles, and reasons for exiting. The principles that can help define the role of human resources include maintaining fairness in actions and decisions within organizations; demonstrating respect for the values and beliefs of others; and providing services which contribute to the welfare of a company. Disagreement on these principals may result from semantics, organizational politics, and value and cultural differences.
