Identification of values relevant to business research
Article Abstract:
A vocabulary of values in modern business terms is constructed from interviews of human resource practitioners to facilitate the maximization of human capital in organizations. Human resource management (HRM) is tasked with the matching of individual employees' values with those of the organization, an undertaking that is possible only with a common terminology. The Allport-Vernon-Lindzey (1928), England (1967) and Rokeach (1973) value taxonomies currently in use are inappropriate for use in the context of the modern corporation. The survey yielded a list of 24 values, the top five of which included cooperation, diligence, moral integrity, openness and initiative. This terminology will be useful in synthesizing business strategy and HRM, especially in traditional human resource functions such as structural design, staffing, training, evaluation and compensation.

Unitarism, pluralism, interests and values
Article Abstract:
People often conceal their real motives, particularly in politics and industrial relations, and their actions may be intended to further their intrests. There has been a return to unitarist approaches to management, linked with the rise of human resource management, and the increased emphasis on employee cooperation is particularly reflected in the conduct of industrial relations. There is more emphasis on enterprise culture and values and there has been a change in orientation in both unitarism and pluralism.

Non-invasive breathalyser test for solvents could lead to new guidance values
Article Abstract:
The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) has developed a new breath test, the Breath Sampler, that can identify solvents. It is a biological monitoring (BM) test which is non-invasive and operates in a similar way to police breath-alcohol tests. More than seven million employees in the UK work in solvent industries, and the major use of solvents is in paints, inks, coatings and adhesives.
