Mercer New Zealand seminar: London
Article Abstract:
William M. Mercer Ltd. sponsored a seminar on corporate superannuation in New Zealand in London. During the seminar, speaker Louis Boulanger provided the audience with a background on New Zealand's superannuation scheme and noted that most of the country's growth is concentrated in retail activities. He also emphasized the impact of the electoral system and governmental policy on the financial market of New Zealand. Boulanger further mentioned the major working groups required by the government to probe into private retirement provisions. The new Coalition government aims to focus on individual savings, instead on pensions.

The superannuation surcharge in Australia: a change of government results in a new direction
Article Abstract:
The Australian Liberal/National government's creation of a superannuation surcharge was finalized on June 1997 and is retroactive to August 20, 1996. The new charge is imposed on employer contributions to superannuation for individuals earning above 70,000 Australian dollars and some 15% more for those earning above 85,000 Australian dollars. The move has been highly criticized by the superannuation industry due to its excessive cost and inefficiency.
