Millennium bug threatens safety systems says watchdog
Article Abstract:
The UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) director general David Eves claims the Millennium bug is a serious threat to safety control systems when the date changes became a problem at the start of the year 2000. The HSE has produced a report called Safety and the Year 2000, which gives guidance to businesses regarding the Millennium problem. UK business awareness of the problem was widespread, according to Eves, but he was not as confident about business in Eastern European countries.

Health and safety inspectors decry derisory level of penalties
Article Abstract:
The work of the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is being undermined by extremely low fines which are being imposed on companies by courts, according to HSE director Jenny Bacon. The HSE would like to see fines as high as 20,000 pounds sterling, although the average penality is about 4,785 pounds sterling in 1998. The number of HSE prosecutions fell to 77 in 1998 from 80 in 1997, despite a rise in the amount of on-site work carried out by inspectors.
