Annual review article 1996
Article Abstract:
Deregulation remained the key issue in the United Kingdom government's industrial relations policy in 1996, with labor unions a key target. Membership of the European Union had an impact on UK industrial relations in the areas of collective bargaining and legislation. Labor union membership fell for the 16th year in a row to about 7.3 million in 1995 from 8.2 million in 1994. Levels of industrial action grew in 1996, particularly among workers in the transport industries and postal service. Disputes were primarily in response to measures aimed at changing working practices.

The equity niche in total compensation: a brief review of recent research and some practical applications
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the effectivity of equity schemes for total compensation. Both practitioners' accounts and academic research were evaluated while legislated requirements were not considered. Although results showed that equity schemes may not go beyond being niche elements, data show that equity mechanisms can improve the perception of managerial accountability and employer credibility.
