New employment standards needed as meaning of diploma changes
Article Abstract:
Educational attainment is no longer an effective predictor of job performance. Results of the 1992 National Norms Study conducted by Wonderlic Personnel Test Inc reveal that educational attainment as an indicator of workers' performance is decreasing in validity and reliability along with the decline in the level of graduates' abilities. The study also found a sharp drop in the ability level of job applicants according to job positions. These and other results of the study should prompt employers who rely heavily on educational attainment in making hiring decisions to explore other predictors of job performance. The Norms Study suggest that using the applicant ability assessment may be more helpful in ensuring that companies hire capable workers.

'Real world' problems foreshadow continued slow growth in 1993
Article Abstract:
The CIGNA Corp economics team forecasts a constant economic growth rate of 3% for the US in 1993 and doubts the occurrence of a substantial economic expansion at the end of the year due to real world problems. The global recession precludes an increase in US exports. Likewise, domestic growth will be inhibited by the changing demographic landscape dominated by now-middle-aged baby boomers. Overbuilding in the 1980s will continue to manifest its adverse effects with the credit crunch and cuts in defense spending will lead to more job losses.
