I suppose you think that's funny! The role of humour in corporate learning events

Article Abstract:

A study into the use of humour in business training courses found that it can be used to release tension within a learning situation and encourage group cohesion for students. Humour can also be used as a learning tool, to help explain a difficult concept or to relieve boredom. Five courses run by UK banking institutions were analysed. Students were found to use humour as a defence against instructors when they felt threatened and it was used to reduce hostility. Instructors did not use humour often and in some cases found it difficult to cope with humorous students.
