Organizing in Puerto Rico: interview with Jose La Luz

Article Abstract:

Labor organizer Jose La Luz feels his efforts on behalf of the AFL-CIO to organize Puerto Rican government workers has the potential to raise union density in that territory to over 35%. The Puerto Rican chamber of commerce and manufacturers voted against legislation permitting this campaign, but over 150,000 public service workers should decide the issue in March, 2000.

The editor provides a summary of the themes addressed in this issue, focusing on labor union democracy, member representation, and new technology's impact on the nature of work and organization of workers. The need for unions to develop introspection and constructive self-criticism in order to met these challenges in an era of economic uncertainty is stressed.
