Pensions for an aging world

Article Abstract:

Governments must examine retirement income structures in other countries to determine the most appropriate plan in the light of demographic changes. An advanced retirement system has three important components: individual and family support, union or company-provided pensions and old age insurance, and assistance programs from the government. Governments should also weigh the advantages and disadvantages of defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans.

Factors affecting pension and health benefits availability in small and large businesses

Article Abstract:

A company's size was found to be the primary determining factor in the availability of both health and pension benefits. Specific determinants were measured, such as employee characteristics, union activity and profit range. Profit does not influence availability, as pension contributions are voluntary and health care costs determine the amount of benefits available.

Are employees missing the big picture?

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented of an analysis conducted into 193,000 defined contribution plan distributions in 1998. This illustrates that over half of the participants chose cash payments when changing jobs rather than taking the advised route of rolling their balances over to their new employer's plan.
