Personnel management in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

The important issues that the personnel management (PM) field will face in the 1990s include: dealing with increased change in the business environment; enhancing training and staff development; and increasing involvement in strategic planning. The greatest challenge to PM will be in the management of knowledge workers, who have higher qualifications, a better sense of self-worth, and less company loyalty than traditional workers. The management of knowledge workers, who generally expect higher status and pay and have the qualifications to seek other employment, will be a continual source of tension to PM professionals. PM professionals will have to design professional development plans for knowledge workers that balance their demands with those of other workers.

Managing 1992

Article Abstract:

Personnel managers who believe that they will be facing challenges as a result of the 1992 single European market need to understand that European Community countries are already dealing with a unified market in 1989. The number of mergers and acquisitions is rapidly increasing and non-community countries are establishing their presence in Europe. However, personnel management ramifications of such development include: a shortage of human resources; increasing difficulty recruiting skilled employees; and a need for more training. A social charter should be developed which establishes basic principles that do not impose a single viewpoint on member-states and that are practical.
