Decisions related to payments of employees should be left to managers, HR professionals, and their consultants, as there is no pay-for-payment plan that would definitely work when implemented unilaterally. Thomas Kochan provides some principles for pay-for-performance plans in order to be successful and sustainable.

Strategic human capital management in SMEs: an empirical study of entrepreneurial performance

The association between human capital management (HCM) and human resources management (HRM) practices and the ability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to be entrepreneurial is discussed. The study suggests that HCM plays an important role in the integration of the HR system.
