Is moonlighting mired in myth?

Article Abstract:

A survey of 404 clerical and production personnel, 252 firefighters, and 283 blue-collar workers reveals that moonlighting is much more prevalent than previously thought and that there are no significant performance, commitment, or health differences between moonlighters and non-moonlighters. The survey reveals that 15 to 20 percent of personnel moonlight. Other studies reveal that moonlighters tend to participate more in voluntary organizations, that they tend to have a more active social life, and that they have greater job satisfaction and a stronger work ethic than their non-moonlighting colleagues. One study lists the major reasons cited for moonlighting as: 32 percent were meeting regular expenses, 18 percent enjoy the second job, 10 percent are saving for the future, and nine percent plan to buy something special.

Severance pay: a liability in waiting?

Article Abstract:

Severance pay is the payment of unearned salary to employees upon involuntary termination. When practiced by a corporation, severance pay can become a legally required economic burden if the company lays personnel off, or is sold to another corporation. Severance pay benefits may have long-term legal effects; a case is cited in which a company that purchased part of another corporation subsequently went bankrupt and paid the employees severance benefits; the court found that the original selling corporation was also liable for payment of severance benefits to these same employees. Employers are advised to review their severance pay benefit plans, whether formal or informal. Other legal cases dealing with severance pay are discussed.
