Quality is Pepsi's challenge

Article Abstract:

The Springfield, MO facility of Pepsi-Cola General Bottler, Inc has the distinction of being the only plant ever to receive a 100% rating from Pepsi USA. The plant is the smallest of 13 divisions, but dedicated teamwork and high quality standards since its beginning in 1977 have produced consistently high-quality beverage ratings. Loyalty and a feeling of family are evident among employees, and there is very little turnover. All managers have previous work experience on either sales routes or on the production floor, and therefore have a first-hand knowledge of the business. Boundaries between marketing, production, and finance are sometimes indistinct. Managers assume responsibilities in different areas in a cooperative effort toward common goals. Interdepartmental communication and close contact with upper management are important factors in successful performance.

Barriers to quality

Article Abstract:

Many businesses are focusing on quality management as a way to improve productivity and competitiveness, but some firms may not really know what quality management is. According to literature on the subject, quality management can be defined as four absolutes: quality is conformance to requirements; the system of quality is prevention of errors; the measurement of quality is the price of nonconformance; and the standard for performance is zero defects. To develop quality standards, firms are advised to take certain steps, including: setting quality policies, distributing quality policies to all employees, making sure all workers understand quality policies, and organizing quality improvement teams.

Blueprint for quality improvement

Article Abstract:

The statistically aided management (STAM) system is a technique for improving product quality. STAM consists of: promoting active management commitment to quality; supporting market-driven efforts to improve quality; encouraging quick response to customer needs; and using quality improvement tools. STAM helps to improve quality by dividing the manufacturing process into individual steps and emphasizing a long-range commitment to excellence.
