Recruitment, retention and return: the NHS and the 3Rs

Article Abstract:

The UK National Health Service's (NHS) Addenbrooke's Hospital employee recruitment and retention strategy involves increasing the variety of benefits offered to employees. The hospital's benefits include a concourse with a coffee shop, a general store, a gift shop, hairdressers, and travel agents. The competition for female employees has led Addenbrooke's to offer such benefits as home employment, job-sharing, and flextime. Leisure activities for staff members include tennis, swimming, and water polo. Staff members receive discounts on such activities as hotel rooms, automobile insurance, and retail goods. The NHS is also changing the workforce's profile and increasing the labor market in which personnel policies can function by investigating ways in which support personnel may be substituted for scarce skilled workers.

Meeting the training needs of NHS personnel specialists

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service (NHS) of Great Britain provides career development programs and workshops for personnel specialists and directors through its own training agency, called NHS Personnel. Local initiatives to develop personnel specialists have also been supported by the NHS. Research is ongoing in the use of learning sets for training trust personnel directors. A study is also being undertaken to examine unit labor costs for hospitals and specialities. The NHS expects to place more emphasis on personnel management quality and practice. The agenda of priorities of the NHS include focusing more attention on learning and problem-solving using internal consultancy, dealing with the conflict regarding its true interests, and handling the public's reaction to its political profile.
