Article Abstract:

Recent research has indicated that water voles are under greater threat of extinction than had been realised. Indeed, they may die out altogether in the River Thames and its tributaries within the next two decades. Strong evidence is now emerging linking the growing numbers of North American mink, which escaped from fur farms in the 1940s and 1950s, with the decline in the number of water voles. Vole numbers were also declining before the arrival of mink, probably as a result of the growing use of land for grazing cattle and sheep and the removal of hedgerows.
