Site shutdown: one HR leader tells her story

The human resources department of the Orem, UT, plant of Signetics Co. was faced with a special challenge when management announced the impending shutdown of the facility within a year. One of the first issues it had to grapple with was the retention of principal employees who were eager to find employment in other companies but were still needed by Signetics before the actual shutdown. These employees were enticed to stay with the help of a generous severance pay. The human resources department initiated frequent, frank communication with employees to address their concerns and answer their questions. It also offered outplacement and retraining services, accommodated requests, and maintained morale and productivity. As a result of its services, the HR department was able to help employees cope with the transition and the eventual closedown of the plant.

Oral modification of plan
Article Abstract:
Employees are eligible for severance benefits even when they did not suffer unemployment and despite an oral plan policy withholding severance pay to employees who accept comparable work and pay. The District Court of Maine decided in the Bellino versus Schlumberger Technologies Inc case that Schlumberger's unwritten policy of denying severance benefits to departing employees who continue working at similar jobs with similar pay violates the plan's intentions. The court also ruled that the oral characteristic of the policy does not qualify as an amendment to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974.

The safety measures that have to be implemented by the tall buildings, in order to protect the workers who work in them, following the attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Centre are discussed. The security and safety risks presented by the tall buildings post September 11and the appropriate safety measures required are given.
