Something in the air: apart from Legionella, can other bioaerosols be hazardous? Roger Barker looks at how airborne micro-organisms can affect our health and summaries recent studies of emissions from composting sites and recycled biosolid fertilizers

Article Abstract:

Legionnaries' Disease is caused by breathing in small droplets of water contaminated by Legionella bacteria. Even though bioaerosal exposure remains moderate during collection of organic household waste, it unquestionably leads to bronchial inflammation. The results from the studies carried out in the United States clearly indicate t hat there is no scientific evidence that populations close to biosolids application sites are at risk from biosolids.
