State of Play on the Youth Training Scheme

Article Abstract:

Britain's Manpower Services Commission (MSC) has contracted with employers to provide work-based training for youth under the Youth Training Scheme (YTS). The number of training positions in each area is based on projections of youth unemployment. In addition to positions with industry, some youth will be placed on community projects. Training and development of the YTS staff who will be monitoring the program is being carefully undertaken. The YTS staff reviews student performance and counsels students on career choices. The goal of the training program is to prepare students for permanent jobs and thus ease the rate of unemployment.

Man of the Moment: Richard Wright, Director of Personnel, Reed International

Article Abstract:

An interview with Richard Wright, director of personnel at Reed International, details his personal development, job development, and opinions on current personnel issues. He is strongly influenced by his Christianity and belief in the importance of family life. He is enthusiastic about employee involvement and proud of his company's pension scheme. However, he has very conservative ideas on women and work. He is said to be anguished over open employment of women on the same basis as men and concerned about how shift changes and mobility would affect his view of women in families.
