Studying to Be a Personnel Manager

Article Abstract:

The Foundation Course in Personnel Practice is now offered by sixty different colleges and training organizations in England. Its purpose is to offer students the opportunity to acquire and develop a range of personnel skills. The core studies include the following: an introduction to the personnel function, an interpersonal and interviewing skills. Participatory teaching methods are used wherever possible to involve students in the practice of personnel. The emphasis is on the development of skills rather than acquiring knowledge. The involvement of experiencec personnel in course work is also a key element. Successful completion of the course leads to IPM's national certificate in personnel practice.

After eight years as a civil servant in several personnel positions, the author decided to gain more formal education to further his career. He recounts his experience in a Foundation Course in Personnel Practice. The course helped him mature as a manager, receive advanced responsibility and improve his academic skills.

Article Abstract:

The student author recounts her experience taking a foundation course in personnel management. Her employer encouraged her to take the course and then appointed her to the newly created position of personnel officer. She felt her coursework prepared her for the responsibility encountered on the job.
