The HR budget squeeze
Article Abstract:
Human resources (HR) professionals are learning to cope with budget reductions necessitated by the recessionary economy. The challenge for many HR managers is to find ways of controlling whatever expenses can be controlled. This may be done by setting broad budget parameters and then narrowing them down to a specific budget for a given year. After this, a control system must be developed to monitor and limit expenditures. Making provisions for unexpected expenses is also essential to the planning and monitoring of expenditures. The use of such strategies in the management of HR expenditures has proven to be effective in many areas. For instance, the median cost of relocating employees was brought down to $44,804 in 1991 from $45,620 in 1990. Similarly, the costs of recruitment, training and temporary help were successfully reduced.

A shift in attitudes toward work hours
Article Abstract:
People who work shifts other than the normal eight-hour daytime shifts often suffer from fatigue that is like long-term jet lag. People on rotating schedules with common changes may never adjust completely. The results can include lack of alertness and lower performance. A test program to help shift workers involved sending out a questionnaire and booklet about coping with shift work. Workshops on coping methods were offered. General recommendations to cope with working shifts include: avoiding alcohol and drugs, and scheduling regular eating, sleeping and social time. Employers can help shift-workers by scheduling full week shifts and switching shifts in a clockwise direction.
