The Influence of Macroeconomic Variables on the Probability of Union Decertification
Article Abstract:
There has been an extensive increase of union decertifications since 1947, when the bargaining agent could be decertified. Research on union decertification growth is usually concerned with elections or union characteristics. Aggregate decertification probabilities from the time of the Taft-Hartley Act are studied. The influence of macroeconomic factors on the proportion of decertification elections that the unions lost is explored. The model used was based on 1960-1980 voting processes in decertification elections. The conditional probability of decertification was shown to be a positive function of the inflation rate and a negative function of the labor market's state.

The effect of voting procedures on union representation elections: the multi-union case
Article Abstract:
Public choice theorists have shown that choice of voting procedures may affect the outcome when more than two alternatives are on a ballot. The run-off election and the two-part ballot are two alternatives used in representation elections involving more than one union. A comparison of these alternatives under various voting strategies shows that the run-off election used by the NLRB results in fewer union wins if workers vote sincerely or if they engage in strategic behavior. The run-off procedure results in more union wins if workers seek to avoid their least-favored option or if they follow a second-best strategy. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Regionality in NLRB decertification cases
Article Abstract:
This study presents evidence for significant regional differences in both independent and dependent variables across NLRB regions in decertification cases. It suggests that dichotomizing the question of regionality in NLRB cases into South-Non-South differences may be inappropriate. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
