The benefits and costs of training: a comparison of formal company training, vendor training, outside seminars, and school based training
Article Abstract:
A study of training practices in Corporate America was conducted. The complete sample includes 6,810 employees who were covered in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth for the period 1988-1992. Results showed that only 30% received training over the study timeframe. However, only 13% actually got over 100 hours of training. The form of training that predominated was company training, with 22% reporting having received this type of training. The most common company training was formal company training, the incidence of which was about double that of vendor training and outside seminars. Most company training was paid by the employer. Training outside the firm increased earnings by more than 10% while internal training raised earnings by 8%. Of the three types of company training, outside seminars had the greatest benefit, boosting earnings by about 10%, as compared to 5% for formal training.

Certifying compensation and benefits management competencies
Article Abstract:
The American Compensation Assn (ACA) is responsible for the certification of human resources professionals engaged in compensation and benefits management. The certification programs are based on current body of knowledge that is continuously updated to incorporate new human resources competencies. ACA launched the Certified Compensation Professional designation in 1976, which was followed by the Certified Benefits Professional designation in 1994. Its global affiliate, the Global Remuneration Organization launched the Global Remuneration Professional designation in 1998. Those who are preparing for ACA exams can attend seminars offered by the association, such as hotel and conference centers seminars and corporate in-house programs. The Academic Partnership Network was formed in 1997 as a link to college and university teaching, and research communities.

From political praise to stock options: reforming compensation systems in the People's Republic of China
Article Abstract:
The People's Republic of China (PRC) has experimented with a variety of compensation systems over a period of four decades in an effort to change from a centrally-planned economy to one motivated by market socialism. An analysis of the PRC's efforts can demonstrate the effort's effect on productivity and motivation and what may be needed for future economic growth. Currently, the PRC still lacks an effective motivational framework by Western standards and the country must work to overcome obstacles such as: removing opposition to material incentives; managing population control so as not to risk economic growth with too many job seekers; and managing inflationary pressures. It is forecasted that the PRC will continue with compensation reforms at a slow pace if there is continued commitment to modernization.
