The dynamics of downsizing
Article Abstract:
The management of companies engaged in downsizing or planning to downsize should publicly acknowledge the trouble they had in coming to the decision, which is necessary to maintain or restore the financial health of the organizations. The benefits of showing the highest level of ethics when downsizing include: an ethical commitment to employees who have given their time and energy to their employers is maintained; retained employees will have an increased level of acceptance of the downsizing; and the appearance of the companies to local communities will be enhanced. The factors in deciding on the size of the reduction in force include the impact of the turnover, effects of early retirement inducements, and the possibility of limiting or eliminating the reduction. The criteria to use in selecting the employees to be affected include tenure, position, and employment status.

A comprehensive approach to improving attendance
Article Abstract:
Production problems caused by absenteeism were solved at the Sola Barnes-Hind contact lens plant by changing the company sick-leave policy. The system with 10 annual sick days was replaced by an annual allotment of 40 personal insurance (PI) hours that could be used for any purpose that prevented attendance on the job. Employee response was very positive with a dramatic decrease in weekly sick leave payments per employee form $7.03 to $3.91 for a total annual savings of $160,000. Incentives for perfect attendance included cash prizes in a monthly drawing and a semiannual dinner. Perfect attendance was also a plus in the performance evaluation for pay raises.
