The search for flexibility: Skills and workplace innovation in the Germany pump industry

Article Abstract:

The highly skill Germany manufacturing sector and the apprenticeship system of the 1980s were models considered worth emulating by policy-makers in the US and UK. However the successes are jeopardized by the spread of lean production and the existing skill-creation system. These concerns are explored in relation to the pump industry in Germany. It was found that the presence of a highly skilled work force could deter the adoption of multifunctional work teams, although the strength of the skill-creation system has potential for a distinctive German production model.
