The smile on the face of a leadership tiger?
Article Abstract:
The effectivity of personnel selection methods can be affected by 'the smile factor,' also referred to as 'the halo effect.' There have been many instance when employees who are well-liked and who seem to get along well with people land leadership positions. A study was done involving personnel who have been promoted to management positions to examine their competencies and motivations. The results revealed the executives to possess such qualities as the ability to influence others and to communicate effectively. However, it was also revealed that these managers lacked certain competencies essential to organizational effectiveness, such as the ability and motivation to manage people, and to exercise sustained leadership over others. In choosing leaders, consideration should be given to the candidates' demonstrated competencies, not appearances, impressions or opinions.

The sorts of leadership
Article Abstract:
Extensive research is done on the differences between leaders and managers, as helping managers develop into adept leaders is a challenge to even the most seasoned trainers. A simple card activity is suggested to determine differences between managers and leaders whereby the behaviors expected as an individual moves from manager to leader are identified as they can learn which responsibilities can be delegated and which they must improve while making the transition.
