Why Dow went for BS5750
Article Abstract:
The human resources (HR) department of the Dow Chemical Co decided to seek accreditation by the British Standards Institution in 1989 to achieve a quality revolution. Two years later, its recruiting, training and compensation operations at the company's Barry, Uxbridge and King's Lynn plants helped the HR department to achieve the British Standard (BS) 5750 status. BS5750 registration is not a different concept from TQM but is actually a component of the total quality program. It aims to achieve the first TQM-required transformation of process standardization and statistical control. Dow Chemical has found that BS5750 indeed addresses this objective but also affects the development of a quality culture, the second required transformation of TQM.

Human resource management in relation to generic strategies, a comparison of chemical and food and drink companies in the Netherlands and Great Britain
Article Abstract:
A comparison of human resource management (HRM) in eight UK firms and a dozen firms in the Netherlands belonging to the food and drink and chemicals sectors indicates that HRM is different in the two countries because of different cultures. Issues researched include business systems, the national impact of HRM, decentralisation and strategic integration, generic strategies, and HRM and personnel policies. There were a number of restrictions, such as the lack of data on HRM.
