Article Abstract:

The role the US labor movement plays in American politics is examined, focusing on why the labor movement historically may have been considered to be on the left or in the center of the political spectrum. Topics include the impact of the end of the cold war on labor politics, the election of John J. Sweeney to president of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations, and the relationship between civil rights and labor rights.

Anatomy of Vermont's livable wage campaign

This article examines the liviable wage campaign in Vermont, focusing on the attainablitiy of its goals, such as raising the minimum wage, as well as raising awareness and activism about the wage gap between available jobs and family needs. The author discusses how the movement evolved from building public awareness, to labor-community action, to small business activism.

Organizing Wal-Mart: an anti-union company bests labor

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ability to keep labor unions from organizing Wal-Mart workers is presented. Tactics used to deter labor organizing include use of extravagant employee benefits, calling in of union-busters, and dismissal of employees who attempted to organize unions.
