Building new catastrophe models
Article Abstract:
Property insurers have began to use computer models for guidance in underwriting. These models forecast the loss potential from various catastrophes through the analysis of historical data and experience. They are also capable to calculate damages at insured sites, simulate different hazards and business interruption losses across portfolio sites. However, some experts in the insurance and software development industries are concerned with the value of catastrophe models for casualty lines, asserting that the scale of casualty losses does not compare with property losses.
