Current environment - industry performance remains strong
Article Abstract:
A review of life and health insurance industries is presented. The industry has reported healthy earnings growth. However, outlook for future earnings is not very bright. Sales of fixed annuities were good in 2003 and 2004. Low interest rates have adversely affected the investment income of life insurers. Mergers and acquisitions in the industries, and regulatory reforms related to the insurance industry are also discussed. Group life insurer writers are likely to receive some relief from terrorist risks.

Many of the issues that beleaguered the U.S. life insurance industry since the late 1990s was resolved or were addressed. The consumers are seeking insurance and annuity products as attractive options for securing retirement income, following a significant improvement in the credit quality and stability in the financial markets.
