Employee benefits following a corporate restructuring: the importance of strategic planning
Article Abstract:
Companies that are restructuring their operations must ensure that their human resource and benefit operations and other business systems are also revamped to support the new corporate environment. Organizations that fail to address issues relating to employees and retirees are placing the future success of their restructuring programs at risk. Aside from personnel concerns, legal, financial, tax and accounting issues that are bound to arise from reorganization should also be dealt with as efficiently as possible. Executive benefit plans and pension plans in a restructured environment are discussed.

Article Abstract:
Employers should coordinate with government agencies so that existing state and federal laws are incorporated in their disability programs. The issues are hard to address due to the lack of definitive federal and regulatory guidance. Although the obvious recourse is not to assign or alienate nonqualified benefits, employers should clearly formulate their position.
