Global reinsurers mirror U.S. consolidation trend
Article Abstract:
A.M. Best has evaluated the reinsurance market's performance in 1996 and released its findings through its special report entitled 'Market Shakeout Kicks Into High Gear in Domestic Reinsurance Segment.' Mergers and acquisitions showed an upward trend in both domestic and international markets. Consolidation is due to steady premiums, competition and globalization. Consolidation has grouped reinsurance companies into three groups, with the first two groups holding the top half of the market. The company has created a database focusing on world demand for reinsurance.

Soft market encourages consolidation
Article Abstract:
The soft insurance market is prompting the reinsurance industry to consolidate, globalize, and form relationships. The formally cyclical market has been soft for nearly ten years since the mid-1980s, and the industry is also suffering from several major and frequent catastrophes that occurred in the early 1990s. Reinsurers are expanding in alternative markets and are raising capacity in order to obtain higher returns. Demand and competition in reinsurance has grown especially in the United States. A table lists the top 50 reinsurance companies.

Recapturing the alternative market
Article Abstract:
Insurers, reinsurers and other financial service companies have found various business opportunities and activities in the alternative market resulting from capacity glut. Companies have introduced several initiatives to attract clients. Some of these include the provision of value-added customer services and the offering of competitive products through low fronting cost, pricing and attachments. Moreover, insurance agents have shown interest in captives as a hedge against possible changes in the future.
