Successful insurers will segment products and marketing strategies to address specific customer needs, develop symbiotic relationships with banks and be willing to seek out new distribution avenues. Insurers will need to expand their financial offerings to compete with the myriad of players entering the market.

The insurance industry's image has slipped since 1986, according to Robert R. Googins, the Insurance Marketplace Standards Assn's (IMSA) first chief. He believes that IMSA, newly formed by the industry, gives companies a chance to improve their image in more than a cosmetic way. He noted that the body will develop a mechanism for reinforcing companies' commitment to improvement.
