Justifying insurance company political/charitable expenditures
Article Abstract:
An insurance company's contributions to political and charitable causes are viewed with mixed feelings by policyholders. A set of criteria is suggested to evaluate the merit of such contributions. Contributions that are made to benefit the firm as a whole and those that advance the company's equity are to be considered justifiable. On the other hand, expenditures that are made to espouse a political viewpoint not shared by all policyholders and those that only benefit management or support certain groups of policyholders to the detriment of others are to be regarded as unjustified.

Insurance: who benefits?
Article Abstract:
Insurance policyholders have a tendency to think that they will never get anything back if they never have a loss after all the premiums have been paid. Contary to this view, the major advantage of insurance is not that it compensates for losses. Its advantage lie in having peace of mind, security and freedom from worry. Other benefits include unburdening resources for more productive investment and promoting commerce.

The right to underwrite
Article Abstract:
Underwriting has become an imperiled activity as more limitations are being placed on insurance companies' right to underwrite. In this regard, companies should defend underwriting in areas where it is socially beneficial. They should also be willing to accept the reality that insurance as an activity can still flourish despite restrictions on the 'right to underwrite.'
