Managed care shakeout: competitors vie for bigger slice
Article Abstract:
Health insurers and health care companies are competing with each other for a larger share of the managed care market. But the market is becoming saturated, thus profitability will continue to decline. Insurers, hospitals and physicians experience many conflicts of interest in the managed care environment, and consumers demand that medical costs be controlled while quality care increases. Management strategies adopted that provide innovative solutions to managed care issues may pave the way for the future of health care.

Can managed care really cut health care costs?
Article Abstract:
The double-digit increases in health care costs that have been normal in the industry for some time now are a result of nominal increases in expenditures. The recent stability in health care costs is not a direct result of the effectiveness of managed care. However they have improved the efficiencies of the system. The health of the population, or lack of health in the population is directly responsible for increases in health care costs.

Opportunities expanding in 24-hour care programs
Article Abstract:
Nearly 75% of California employers with more than 1,000 workers are considering integrating workers' compensation and group health care benefits, according to a study conducted by Price Waterhouse LLP. Self-insured companies are interested in 24-hour care as it decreases costs for both workers' compensation and group health care plans. Three health care providers in southern California have implemented a unified 24-hour care program.
