Retiree health cutbacks: responding to lessons learned from recent court developments
Article Abstract:
Many employers find it necessary to cut back on retired employee health care benefits as a result of increasing health care costs, reductions in Medicare benefits, lowered corporate profits, decisions to downsize and other changes in economic conditions of the 1980s. Retirees are legally challenging company decisions to cut back on promised benefits. Cases illustrate the courts' perspectives on non-collectively bargained and collectively-bargained agreements between employers and retirees. The importance of a good corporate communication program is stressed.

Some different perspectives on retiree health benefits
Article Abstract:
Employers should consider developing Medicare policies that would reduce the health costs shouldered by retirees and evaluate the implications of rationing health care services. Health economist Mark V. Pauly believes that Medicare reform can be attained through an increase in payroll and other taxes and the substitution of private benefits. Pauly also suggests the reduction of benefits by shifting costs to providers and sick beneficiaries and changing eligibility requirements.
