Taking stock

Article Abstract:

The core problem of mutual insurer's plan to shift to stock ownership is how to get more capital to improve the company or make acquisitions. The conversion however carries its own share of disadvantages. It entails the daily hardships of dealing with stock prices, securities analysts and a fluctuating investment community. The mutual form of ownership exists in banks, credit unions and insurance. Due to the expected high costs of full 'demutualization,' states have come up with some legislations allowing insurers to partially 'demutualize' by forming mutual holding companies.
