Team concept successful if managed carefully
Article Abstract:
The downsizing trend that has effected corporations has yielded organizations with fewer people that must bear the same or larger work loads as did the pre-downsized work force. Downsized companies can maximize the productivity of their work forces by adopting the team concept. If managed carefully, work teams can be highly successful. The experience of teams at 147 different insurance companies shows how successful teams work. A successful team is limited to 10 members and has its priorities set by management. While commitment is on a collective basis, accountability is on an individual basis.

Industry must shatter merger management myths
Article Abstract:
Insurance companies should avoid myths associated with mergers and acquisitions. Executives should not try to consolidate duplicate computer systems in the first part of merger efforts. Also, too much organizational change during the merger can be a fatal mistake, so business reengineering should be carefully planned. Companies should allow four- to six-weeks of full-time training to help employees get up to speed with new products, new job responsibilities and new computer systems.

To increase productivity rebuild in-house counsel
Article Abstract:
Insurance companies should learn to manage their in-house litigation departments more effectively. Many in-house legal departments tend to be managed like traditional law firms, despite an awareness that law firms are inefficient. However, in-house legal departments offer strategic opportunities to control costs and quality. Such departments, though, need to be managed with efficiency and cost savings as key goals.
