Turning ambivalence into commitment
Article Abstract:
A human resources professional can improve the chances of his/her being hired by a prospective employer by transforming the usual ambivalent attitude of the interviewer into commitment. Three kinds of letters can sometimes do the trick. One is the letter of understanding which summarizes what the job candidate knows about the job including the challenges. Another is a letter which summarizes the candidates' plan of action for the first three months. Third is a letter which shows how a candidate is well-suited for the job.

Professional directions: outplacement services, taxability, and the human resources professional
Article Abstract:
The question whether outplacement services to terminated employees are taxable was analyzed. Numerous companies have started to offer outplacement services as part of severance benefits. This issue is important because outplacement costs can amount to 15% to 20% of the cash compensation of terminated employees. These benefits should be structured such that the IRS will consider it a taxable benefit to employees. The role of human resources professionals in structuring outplacement benefits is discussed.
