Why pay structures?
Article Abstract:
The importance of pay structures is discussed including why they exist and where they are going in the future. The purpose of wage structures is to attract and retain good personnel, motivate workers and to stay within legal compliance structures. An interview was taken with 37 wage administrators that showed that all respondents use more than one wage structure in their firms. Pay structures will persist, but they could be used more as guidelines rather than absolutes, there will be cuts in the number of levels of pay grades and companies in the future might make sure that the rate levels are not above market value in order to leave room for bonus pay.

Mid-sized business vs. the health cost spiral
Article Abstract:
Spiraling health care costs have forced small businesses to scrutinize how they manage their programs. In a national survey conducted to understand and address the issue better, results indicated that health care costs rose an average of 18% from 1991. However, 88% of employers said they will continue their programs as an attraction for employees and as a responsibility. Major medical and hospitalization were the favored health care options. Coverage by health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations were offered by 22% and 18% of respondents respectively.

Communicating a point of service plan
Article Abstract:
More and more US companies are moving away from traditional health benefits plans that allow employees to have free access to doctors of their own choosing. The basic premise of managed health care plans involves the employee's use of one designated primary care physician, whose charges are paid nearly or totally in full by the plan. A twelve-point communication plan to help employers educate employees about the value of managed health care programs is presented.
