Davao-kuo: the political economy of a Japanese settler zone in Philippine colonial society

Article Abstract:

The Japanese settlement in the Philippines, known as Davao-kuo, during the first part of the 20th century is examined. The author maintains the Japanese who migrated to this area seeking work quickly established Davao as an agricultural economy that also supported a number of entrepreneurial businesses, and created a successful, profitable, and politically powerful hemp industry.

It is concluded that modern ICTs have the potential to expand the existing public sphere and to create new opportunities for liberal political activity.
