International humanitarian crises: Two decades before and two decades beyond

Article Abstract:

The prescriptions that would make the UN far more capable of dealing with the sort of humanitarian challenges that may have to be faced over the next two decades is discussed. It is concluded that the UN is not strategic in its approach and cannot escape the pressure of political manipulation that threatens the fundamental humanitarian principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence.

Battle over the box: International election observation missions, political competition and retrenchment in the post-Soviet space

The organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's international election observation missions' (OSCE IEOMs) new political competition in the post-Soviet space have highlighted differences in political values between the West and several post Soviet republics. They have gained political and even strategic importance in the region by contributing to political change.

The right that failed? The ambiguities of conservative thought and the dilemmas of conservative practice in international affairs

Article Abstract:

The dilemmas and ambiguities of contemporary Anglo-American conservative thought and practice in international affairs are assessed. Based on the discussion in understanding of conservative thought as a philosophy of imperfection, it points out that there is a dominant way in which this is understood in the last two hundred years but a rather different sensibility.
