Article Abstract:
Two bodies of literature sought to understand the 'deep determinants' behind the gap between rich and poor nations are examined. While one body of literature highlights the significance of geography as a key analytical concept in understanding the spatial and environmental aspects that affect economic development, other underlines the central role of institutions in accounting for the divide between rich and poor nations.

Participatory development, complicity and desire
Article Abstract:
Participatory Development (PD) is reinterpreted in terms of empire, undertaking a postcolonial and psychoanalytic reading. Even if PD promotes the Other's empowerment, it hinges crucially on our complicity and desire and PD's radicalization makes confrontation of our complicities and desires possible.

The ambivalence of post-development: between reactionary populism and radical democracy

The study defines post-development and examines how far this can be seen as a Foucaultian critique of development. Further it concerns with investigating the dangers of reactionary populism in neo-populist post-development and the convergence between the sceptical variant and radical democracy.
