While one body of literature highlights the significance of geography as a key analytical concept in understanding the spatial and environmental aspects that affect economic development, other underlines the central role of institutions in accounting for the divide between rich and poor nations.

Participatory Development (PD) is reinterpreted in terms of empire, undertaking a postcolonial and psychoanalytic reading. Even if PD promotes the Other's empowerment, it hinges crucially on our complicity and desire and PD's radicalization makes confrontation of our complicities and desires possible.
