The mushroom cloud and national psyches: Japanese and American perceptions of the A-bomb decision, 1945-1995
Article Abstract:
Japan is the first and the only nation to have been bombed and its understanding of the event is different from the view of the US and other nations. The gap between the memories of the two countries is widening. Historical myths, moral aspects and emotion are dominating in Japan. In the US, the concept of national security and the fear of Cold War are prevalent. This difference in interpretation of history has caused some misunderstandings between the two nations.
