The author of this article explores the history of Japanese-American relations during the 1860's. The career of Robert Pruyn, the second United States minister to Japan, is examined, in which he used his political position for personal financial and business gain, and strained United States' relations with Japan.

U.S. strategic debates over the defense of Japan: Lessons for the twenty-first century
Article Abstract:
The changes in defense strategies of Japan and the US since the World War II are presented. Japanese and American scholars have argued that one such change in the US policy toward Japan was from demilitarization and democratization to political and economic rehabilitation.
