Organizational communication and cultural studies: a review essay

Article Abstract:

A selection of recent volumes on organizational communication and cultural studies are analyzed to determine the possible benefits that would result from their integration. It was found that feminist, postculturalist, neo-Marxist, postmodern and postcolonial influences were common among the studies on the two distinct fields. It was also found that integrating cultural approaches into organizational communication would introduce new views on history and symbolism. On the other hand, introducing organization in cultural studies would provide new views on cultural-economic issues.

Complicity as epistemology: reinscribing the historical categories of 'woman' through standpoint feminism

Article Abstract:

Standpoint epistemology refers to the form of philosophy of knowledge that aims to maintain the rationality and objectivity of Enlightenment inquiry. Standpoint feminism was formed when feminist scholars attempted to counter the androcentric bias of normal science by privileging the female perspective in the pursuit of knowledge. Furthermore, standpoint feminists argue that the presumption of disembodied knowing derived from Enlightenment rationalism tacitly reflected male-centered interests and perspectives while claiming objectivity by virtue of scientific method.

Theories of culture and communication

Article Abstract:

The neopositivist, coordinated management of meaning (CMM) and ethnography of communication perspectives are used to evaluate communication, culture and the relationship between the two. The results show that ethnography is a limited perspective which offers good short term prospects but is insufficient for long term research. CMM places excessive emphasis on data and lacks a pragmatic focus.
