What's "public" about public journalism? Public journalism and the lack of a coherent public philosophy
Article Abstract:
The phenomenon of public journalism can be approached in several ways. It can be viewed as a discourse on the proper role of the press, as a set of practices that clarify the role of journalists, and as a movement of people and institutions preoccupied with the need for citizen participation in the democratic process. Five important books that shed light on the work of public journalism scholars are reviewed. These books were authored or edited by J Black, A Charity, E Thornson, D Merritt and J Rosen.

Monsters bred for vanity of man
Article Abstract:
The domestication of animals has allowed humans to produce animals in colours and shapes that would never survive naturally in the wild. With the development of giant turkeys that are too obese to mate naturally, cattle with over-sized udders and dogs, such as bulldogs, with heads that are so big that they can only be delivered by Caesarean, it is argued that the time has come for a halt to be called to such unnatural tampering.
