A strategic fit for foreign publishers; U.S. market gives European companies money-making, data base potential
Article Abstract:
The acquisition of Mead Data Central by the Dutch publishing company Reed Elsevier PLC and of Prentice-Hall Law & Business by Wolters Kluwer are examples of the interest of foreign publishers in their US colleagues. Experts say this interest stems from the leadership of US companies in the online business technology field. Some lawyers worry that the sales might mean higher prices for legal books and online services, but Barry Bayer, a legal publishing columnist, feels new entries in the market will mean lower prices and better quality control.

PC practitioners proliferate; experts warn it may be criminal to dispense legal advice via bulletin boards
Article Abstract:
Attorneys who dispense legal advice via electronic bulletin boards such as Prodigy or Compuserve may be guilty of unauthorized practice of law. This can happen since attorneys using these bulletin boards are in direct dialogue with clients. A spokesman for Prodigy states that the company is not liable for advice given and that the user should beware. Attorneys who dispense only general advice in this way may not be behaving unethically.
