Advocates for poor pounce when banks plan mergers
Article Abstract:
Minoirty and low-income groups demonstrated unprecedented power recently in forcing bank merger partners to pomise huge loan programs to low-income borrowers. Often the bnks want to avoid the drawn-out proceedings community groups are able to force, because the merger agreements are often time- sensitive. Wells Fargo & Co promised in Dec 1995, to lend $45 billion to low- income borrowers over 10 years, and Chase Manhattan-Chemical Banking made a similar $18.1 billion, five-year oath. Critics remain on both sides, though.
