Art world watches two key cases in New York; a federal suit involves an Italian antiquity; a state action, two paintings
Article Abstract:
U.S. v. An Antique Platter of Gold stems from Italy's claim, under laws declaring state ownership of antiquities discovered in its subsoil, to a Sicilian gold cup dating from 500 B.C. bought by New York collector Michael Steinhardt for more than $1 mil. The cup was seized from Steinhardt's residence by US customs agents at Italy's request in 1995. The trial court ruled that the antiquity could be forfeited under U.S. law because according to an Italian law protecting archaeological finds, the cup was stolen.

Affirmative action still a vital tool for women
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court's recent ruling in Adarand Constructors v. Pena and other cases affirms the validity of affirmative action programs and indicates what standards they must meet. Gender and race may be considered in an effort to create opportunity, but any given program must have adequate justification. Affirmative action must only open the way for otherwise qualified candidates. Finally, any programs must extend no further and last no longer than absolutely necessary.
