Assessing macro-level predictors and theories of crime: A meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

A meta-analysis is undertaken to the relative effects of macro-level predictors of crime, in which over 200 empirical studies explore ecological correlates of crime. Racial heterogeneity, poverty and family disruption are the strongest predictors of crime and policing and increased use of criminal justice system are the weakest predictors, while social support and routine activity theories are moderate predictors of crime.

Crime and public transport

Article Abstract:

Much of the crime occurring in public transit systems can be "designed out," preventing problems associated with lack of supervision and overcrowding. Research has not, however, determined whether transportation systems spread crime from high- to lower-crime areas or if some forms of transportation are safer than others.
